PDF, Portable Document Format.

I’ve been doing a lot of reading and experimentation with this file format in the last few months. Better learn to like and understand it, as it will the “base” format for many data files in the near future. Don’t think it will replace .eps anytime soon, but MANY print shops and publishing companies want to work with this format only. As already stated elsewhere in this thread, .AI files by default, starting with version 9, use the pdf structure for the .ai file format. This can be changed; just takes a little effort on the end users part. Look inside the data file for a version 9 or 10 .ai file and compare it to version8 and lower (and that’s look at the data file itself, not open it), it’s pdf in structure even if an .ai extension is assigned.

I perceive this to be just another case of understanding what can and can’t be done with the format and communicating what is required from them, to “you”.

I respectively disagree with Robert about the “non editable” of the files. Like Danny mentions, you can have full control over the file if you have the “rights” and the file was constructed properly to allow such usage. It very much depends on the tools and competence of the person saving the file. Nothing different then a customer telling you its OK to pull a bitmap image from their web site for use on the side of a 20’ box van. It’s about understanding, educating, and communicating.

Just another day in the sign world!
