While most PDF's seem to be read only, there are PDF files that are completely editable, including text and vector manipulation.

One client has been sending their files in PDF format, and the text and vectors can be changed. I believe the original files were created in illustrator 9. In illustrator 9 / 10, there are three file formats that can be saved or exported; AI Doc from 3.0 to 9/10, EPS and PDF.

Photoshop and Quark seem tohandle PDF's differently, and the file sizes are not always smaller. In the files I've received lately, there are numerous embeded color photo images, the make the file sized quite large.

It would be nice if there were a cross program / platform file format, but if this is it, I aggree with Mike - Yuk!
