Glue-Chipped Glass Page

Compiled by Mike Jackson 3-3-04. Modified 3/25/2006

On the surface, Glue-Chipping glass is quite straight forward and easy. Most people trying the process eventually run into snags, so it is important to read all you can before you attempt your first piece. This page should help you gather the information.

How to Chip Glass: Instructions
This is an ever growing list of links which attempt to explain the basics:

Rick Glawson's Asphaltum Method

Rick Glawson more or less re-discovered some of patented processes used by Rawson and Evans Company around the Turn-of-the-Century.

Bob Mitchell's Method

The old standard method. Bob Mitchell wrote his book on the subject in 1984. Unfortunately, the book is out of print, but you can read Rick's account of the process.

Asphaltum Method from SignCraft Mag.

If I must say so, this is a very fine article about the Asphaltum Method. Well, to be honest, I wrote it! At the time of the article in July/August 1997, the process had not been printed and I am unaware of any other similar articles. Feel free to print the article.

Technical Sheet from Milligan & Higgins

Milligan & Higgins makes most of the glue chip glue used around the country. Jay Utzig sends out a simple direction sheet by e-mail when requested. They gave us permission to show it here. Coming soon.

Pat Mackle's
Chip Against Etch Technique

Pat Mackle developed a beautiful technique allowing glue-chipped areas to butt up against frosted areas without a glow line of glass between. This page shows an example and gives basic instructions.

Asphaltum Technique
by Mike Jackson

This article is in PDF format and can be easily printed on your color printer. It shows a step-by-step project from start to finish.

Mike Jackson's
Chip Against Etch Technique Variation

This page shows some actual chipping and a few techniques addressed in earlier pages. This technique uses asphaltum to protect the deep etch lines instead of clear contact paper.

Bruce Jackson's Gold Reverre

Plenty of good information here. Check out the rest of Bruce's wonderful site while there.

Stained Glass Web-Mart

This is a page I found on the Internet with an additional set of instructions for the basic technique.

Glue Ratings
The glue used for chipping glass is generally called animal hide glue. Many companies sell animal hide glue, but to get the best results, you must use glue that has been formulated and tested. Milligan & Higgins produces a product they call #10 GCG (Glue Ghip Glue) rated at 164 Gram Strength.

Milligan & Higgins rate the strength of their glue into 15 different grades.

Grades Available: 80, 110, 135, 164, 192, 222, 251, 280, 315, 347, 379, 411, 444, 478, 512 Jelly Grams

The three grades suitable for glue-chipping are:
5x (weakest) = 135 gram strength
4x (suggested) = 164 gram strength
3x (stonger) = 192 gram strength
